According to United Nations, the international community, through SDG 3, has committed itself to a global effort to eradicate disease, strengthen treatment and healthcare, and address new and emerging health issues. It calls for innovation, and research in these areas to further enhance public policy efforts. A holistic approach to better health will require ensuring universal access to healthcare and to making medicine and vaccines affordable. It also calls for a renewed focus on mental health issues. Suicide is the second leading cause of death globally between the ages of 19 to 25. And finally, health and wellbeing are closely linked with the quality of our environment, and SDG 3 also aims to substantially reduce the numbers of deaths and illnesses caused by air, water, and soil pollution and contamination.

India has shown great improvements towards achieving SDG 3. It has made some progress in reducing its under-five mortality rate, which declined from 125 per 1,000 live births in 1990–91 to 50 per 1,000 live births in 2015–16, and its maternal mortality rate, which declined from 212 per 100,000 live births in 2007–09 to 167 in 2013. India has also made significant strides in reducing the prevalence of HIV and AIDS across different types of high-risk categories, with adult prevalence reducing from 0.45% in 2002 to 0.27% in 2011. However, a quarter of global TB cases occur in India where nearly 2.1 million people live with the disease, and an estimated 423,000 die annually as a result. The Indian government’s National Health Mission prioritizes national wellbeing and is leading change in this area, in addition to targeted national programs against HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases.

COVID-19 pandemic has deeply effected the world progress towards achieving good health and well being. According to World Health Organization, more than 138 million confirmed cases has been reported globally with a total deaths of around 3 million. In India alone, around 14.3 million cases has been reported with a total deaths of around 174 thousand.

This pandemic has proven to be an eye opener to the entire human civilization, as a consequence of which we have observed various philanthropic initiatives being taken by different government regulations to eradicate this threat. Both Public and private sectors have come together to develop treatment for the pandemic. But all these efforts would be in vain if every individual do not take upon themselves to follow proper preventive and precautionary methods during these times. They should support not only the well being of them but also provide for the needy. We should also be thankful for all the COVID warriors who are fighting for the conservation of humanity. We hope with constant with constant efforts of every individual the humanity will not only come triumphant out of this situation but also will succeed in achieving its SDG 3 by 2030.
